U16 TRAVEL TEAM VISION

Vienna Elite will be fielding a team of (12)* highly skilled U16 players. The U16 Travel Team will be our top-level team at this age. Our program is expected to be one of the most rigorous training programs in the Region. The team is expected to be a competitive team that will compete in selected multi-day tournaments in the "Open" division and several local CHRVA tournaments.

U16 Travel Team will compete in AAU Nationals in Orlando in June as part of its tournament schedule. If a bid is earned for USAV Nationals, priority will be given to USAV Nationals.

The U17 Travel Team is expected to practice twice (Tue/Thur) each week, with additional third days of practices/training sessions on Wednesdays throughout the season. Training will be more heavily weighted during the earlier months of the season. Practices will be preceded by 45 minute fitness/conditioning before practice on Thursdays (starting 11/13 - ending 3/26).

On non-tournament weekends from January through May, the Club may also elect to hold "Academy," which will focus on specific skills (i.e., serving, passing, setting, team defense, etc).

Our club strives to be the best club in Northern Virginia when considering the competitiveness of teams, the level of coaching, the club fees, the number of tournaments, and overall access to court time. Our players love to play volleyball and want to compete at a high level!

* At the discretion of the club, 1 or 2 "practice players" will be considered depending on the circumstances of the team. Practice players will not participate in any matches or tournaments unless specifically called upon by the Head Coach.

Note: Club Fees Includes USAV Nationals or AAU Nationals in Orlando, FL.

COACHES

BRETT MATTHES - HEAD COACH

Brett Matthes (USAV IMPACT CERTIFIED) is originally from Reston, VA. In middle school, he was introduced to the sport at an after-school club program. He began playing competitively for his high school team at South Lakes, and began playing club as a sophomore in high school. He continued his career in college, playing as a setter for West Virginia University’s Men’s team for 5 years. While at West Virginia, Brett began coaching as well. He started by assisting the Women's Club Volleyball team with their practices.  He later became the head coach at Trinity Christian School in Morgantown, WV.  In his second year coaching at the school, Coach Brett took on the responsibility of running the school's entire volleyball program. He served as the Varsity Head Coach for both HS and MS teams.

Coach Brett returned to Northern Virginia after graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in History and Africana Studies. He is currently a NASM certified personal trainer working with athletes in the area on plyometrics, speed and agility, as well as strength training. He continues to play volleyball at regional tournaments when he can, but has turned his focus more to coaching. He is the JV Head Coach at The Flint Hill School. The past few seasons, he has been working with many accomplished coaches in Northern Virginia, including former National Team players from the U.S., Brazil, and Guam.

Coach Brett believes his knowledge of the game, gained through both playing and coaching, can provide a fantastic volleyball experience for any athlete who is willing to work hard. Aside from challenging an athlete to become as talented at the sport as they can be, he believes that if an athlete can also have at least half as much fun as he did growing up in volleyball, then he has done a fantastic job. He is excited to return as the Head Coach of Vienna Elite 16 Travel Team this season at Vienna Elite! (Contact: brett.matthes@viennaelite.org )

YULA TAMASHIRO - ASSISTANT COACH

Yula Tamashiro (USAV IMPACT certified) has been playing volleyball for over 25 years. She has competed in and won various tournaments throughout Hawaii, Nevada, California, Texas, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, including women's 6s USAV-sanctioned tournaments, women's and coed sand doubles tournaments, coed 6s and reverse coed 4s tournaments. She continues to compete in various tournaments and leagues in the DMV area throughout the year.

Yula's love of playing volleyball has finally transitioned to coaching. She is excited to be a part of the Vienna Elite coaching staff again, having been the Assistant Coach for U13F, U16L, U17L, and 18's during the past several seasons. Yula most recently was the Head Coach of 15 White during the past two seasons. She is looking forward to being the assistant coach on the 16 Travel Team this season, guiding the younger generation in learning the sport, improving their game, becoming better athletes, and loving volleyball as much as she does. She believes that having a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn and improve are the fundamentals of being successful in volleyball as well as life in general.
